FrankenFeed: The Ulitimate RSS Feed? … Nope.
Posted by Clint under Carolyn, Clint, Computer, Dave O, Journal, Links, People, Software, TechnologyOkay, non-geeks might want to just stop reading now. A lot of people probably haven’t heard about RSS, but it is a way to “subscribe” to “updates”. They can be new news articles, new blog postings, new photo postings, new video postings, new comments on your blog — just about anything.
So me and Dave Oranchak started sharing some RSS feeds. I subscribed to both his blogs. Then I subscribed to the comments. He subscribed to some of mine. But he didn’t quite get ALL of mine.
We realized there was a problem: It’s hard to keep track of another feed. What we need is a feed aggregator, I said. Later on, he found one from Japan: http://www.FrankenFeed.com
So I signed up and aggregated ALL of our feeds:
Now, our single feed is:
But — it doesn’t work when I try it. It doens’t like the “&” in Clint & Carolyn. And there’s no way to change your feed title.
So I must withdraw my endorsement of this. (3/30/2006)
What it supposedly would do would be to aggregates all of Carolyn & I’s feeds:
- Clint’s new photos: http://www.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?id=31355686@N00&format=rss_200
- Comments on Clint’s new photos: http://www.flickr.com/recent_comments_feed.gne?id=31355686@N00&format=rss_200

Now, people can pretty much monitor everything we do with a single RSS feed.
If you are a gmail user, click “Settings” then “Web clips” then remove all the default ones and put in ours. Now your gmail inbox will monitor us quite closely! And easily. . .

Speaking of RSS feeds, I went to Epguides.com to look up some guides, and I just noticed they have RSS feeds for recently added guides, cancelled shows, and dvds. Weird, huh.

I guess for people who REALLY WANT TO KNOW when a new guide comes out.. FOR ANY SHOW?!?! That’s weird. Kinda pointless. They musta just hopped on the RSS buzzword. RSS is largely useless!

Glad to see you using FrankenFeed. Thanks for blogging about it!

Actually, I am withdrawing my endorsement of FrankenFeed.
If I go to the feed I created, it craps out IN THE TITLE because I dared to use an ampersand in the title: “Clint & Carolyn’s feeds”.
Of course, if I go to the site, there is NO AVAILABLE WAY for me to change the title. I can change the feeds, but the title is locked.
I wont be using it in the future, and I would delete my feed if I could.

I’m not a “geek” yet, but I’m trying to be! I spend all day alone in a cubicle but at night I am aspiring to be a blogger on all things caffeinated and cubicle related (www.caffeinatedcubicle.com). I’ve heard about RSS feeds, and similar things and am trying to educate myself about the whole blog culture. Thanks for providing info on the very thing I am seeking knowledge about.
