I guess it will be awhile before gays can marry in Alabama.
If you vote against love, you are evil. Whether you realize it or not, you are petitioning your government to take away the rights of other groups of people.
FUCK ALABAMA!
FUCK THE KKK!

D’oh! At first I missed the year in your title. I was thinking this was a figure for decades ago. I thought the post was showing how attitudes change, that one day people will have more relaxed attitudes of other lifestyles or other forms of marriage….
But now I see the “2000″ very clearly and the statistic provokes a very different response from me – it makes me sad.
May 2, 2006 at 7:52 PM
I wish I wasn’t too lazy to verify this… but…why would someone lie about this?

I know this is really late, but here’s the link to back up your claim:

My siblings are going to college in that state. They don’t understand why I keep criticizing their choice of college. I told them about this and they got all ticked off at the insult. I think they should be getting more ticked off at the backwards thinking of the South, but whateva!
December 27, 2006 at 3:53 PM
Greg — I totally agree. Mark I went to college in Alabama too — I’m hoping that was part of why he dropped out. :)

May 20, 2009 at 8:26 PM
the title simply says, that alabama is not as racism-free as most plays like the US or Canada. And I have never really heard someone be predjudice about the South.
July 2, 2007 at 12:05 PM
AlabamaRules (alabama@yahoo.com), You proved my point utterly –
Alabamans are so xenophobic, fucked up, and rednecky in their thoughts, that they ask people to “STAY THE F*** OUT” simply for having a different opinion.
You, sir, are a xenophobic idiot redneck. You are exactly why I am against Alabamans and ’southern-thinking’ people.
You suck, and Alabama *fucking sucks*.

^^ I let that comment approve simply because:
1) To show people JUST HOW “TARGETED” comment spam can be
2) askimet didn’t catch this is as spam, BECAUSE it was done so well.
I’ve had 2,604 approved comments, and 2,287 comments caught as spam by askimet.
That makes 46.75% of all comments spam.

It is. But at this point I’ve decided to allow it because:
1) it demonstrates the tenacity of spammers
2) it shows just how well they can associate a topic with spam related to that topic
3) if Alabamans hate interracial marriage so much, then I want more people to go to those sites and have interracial marriages JUST OT PISS OFF the Alabamans…

40% of Alabamans voted against IR. Close to 55% of the whites voted against it and it won because 95% of the blacks voted for it. Mountain Brook, AL which is a rich white suburb of Birmingham of the Natalee Holloway fame or notoreity, supposedly went 70% against, and these folks are rich southern whites, not rednecks. Granted, most of them are descended from southern planters who owned slaves and attitudes have been passed on for generations.
October 14, 2007 at 11:43 AM
Thanks for your perspective, George. It’s truly sad. If I were dictator, I would force these people to be more free than they want to be :D
October 22, 2007 at 3:56 PM
the 40% of the people in alabama that voted against interracial marriage are stupid because love is love and they can’t pick who it is other people love.if they think they can then they can go screw themelves over and stop from eating any vegetables from the store because fyi us mexicans grow them and pick em we dont want to pass on our cooties so good luck gavachos!

November 18, 2007 at 6:14 PM
And by the way the ban was lifted 7 years ago, so why did you bring this up now? Nowadays the racism problem is coming mainly from the blacks who are committing a large majority of the crimes. Last year in Chicago, 73% of homicides were committed by black people and only 6 % by white people. Blacks and whites both make up roughly 1/3 of the pop. And this was just one example Just check the US crime statistics. And nowadays Alabama is the state with the least race-related hate crimes reported. The situation is quite similar in other southern states. Just check Statemaster.com.
November 18, 2007 at 7:11 PM
If we are to believe you, MaeR, then the 40% of people who voted against interracial marriage (all racists) have somehow magically had a change of heart in the last 7 years.
Attitudes don’t change that quickly. Nice attempt to throw in some statistics but that says nothing of racism in Alabama.
Fuck Alabama. If it burns, I’ll laugh.
December 17, 2007 at 1:51 AM
Alabama is not racist we just believe people should be with their own kind. It s not our fault blacks can t pass the bar exam. ok

Thank you Clint or whom ever you are for this site but surprisingly i am from Alabama my self and i am an african-american teen that has been dealing with racism all of my life and to be honest i have become some what prejudice of some not all whites here beacause of all of all i’ve gon thru im just glad to see someone who put those red-neck bluecollar asses in their place again thank you
February 15, 2008 at 1:59 AM
clint let me tell you somethen boy. There aint nothing wrong with whites wanting to protect there race and thats what that 40% is tryin to do. And as far as racism goes, im a white man from alabama and i take pride in my race and heritige and if that makes me racist then by god i am. So to wrap this shit up like previously said if you dont like alabama stay the fuck out.
February 27, 2008 at 1:11 PM
Interracial is wrong!, hope all usa ban interracial again
wanna proofs instead of cheap emotionalism?
love is love?
why is that most blacks only date white because their race and dont give a fuck of their inside?
just watch some data
May 12, 2008 at 8:28 AM
im 44 yrs old and so my memory seems to be getting terrible but i do remember this coming up for vote in 2000 and i voted against it too,,,but what they dont tell you in this is that there were other things in the amendment that made people vote against it. but i dont remember the specifics. i voted no on it and i dont care one way or another who people marry,,,its their business. remember thats how politicians work,,,seems especially true in alabama. they add things to try to ram other things through,,,hence ading interracial marriage.
June 3, 2008 at 7:23 PM
I lived in Florida all of my life where i never really saw black people much. i never really thought about them at all except that they should be free Etc, and such. florida was never a big slave state and we only really have blacks in certain very old towns that were in fact slave ports in their history.
i just moved to Birmingham area about 3 or so years ago. Birmingham is around 70 % black. Let me tell you what, the older people they say hi, how ya doin, good morning and all of that other respectful stuff.
The Black people that are my age tend to 9 times out of 10 say anything possible to make me feel like shit.
I guess they are still bitter. But the funny thing is that they werent there either. they are too young to have been. I guess they heard a lot of things from their parents. I sure wasnt there, im too young, and i grew up in Florida. so why give me an attitude, yanno?
so my attitude is getting a bit more negative, and i dont like that.
Id never support the klan or rascism. But we all need to treat each other with respect so this attitude doesnt change among a lot of both white and blacks.
September 18, 2009 at 10:20 AM
I am from Florida too there is racism there too. I have witnessed it and been treated badly because of my race. I was married to a as you guys are putting it a white woman. In my home town i lived in we left because it. It was so bad they used to corner my wife in stores if we happened to be on different isles and call her names like N-lover. This is not the only things that have happened to me i am Latin. Black hair dark skin. I know what your talking about when i have also witnessed black people at there worst. This being said. We have to have compassion for these people and people in general. I am not a fan of anything that divides us. I have not allowed what has happened to me at the hands of blacks or whites effect how i treat others. I treat everyone as i would like to be treated i smile and say hello to everyone i meet. Most times it is returned some times not. But that is ok too. I believe in humanity and think that all people deserve respect and kindness. I Also believe in loving and taking care of oneself too. If it is where you live that is toxic then you have the right to choose where you live. It may take years for people to come together. I hope not. i think we all are inherently good just fears get the best of us. May all of the steps of humanity be blessed and may you all find peace love and happiness.

June 3, 2008 at 7:30 PM
as far as interracial marriage goes, think about it for a second. Just think about it. The White side of the family would have their hair standing straight up in most cases and so would the blacks.
The child would not be truly accepted by either side.
I believe we can get along in all aspects except that one.
June 20, 2008 at 2:05 AM
I belong to one of the oldest and aged results of race mix consequences in a town. Its call Puerto Rico. Its very ironic how people who does not have clear race definitions are racist among thems , including me . What I try to say is : Every situation and or condition always goes from one extreme to another.
So if this is the way , We have to maitain integrity loving our self and everyone avoiding race mixing . We have to respect future generations of 100% whiteness , 100% blackness , 100% asianess.
The caucasians who turns it ships to the western shore are getting terminated by a cultural downward situation accepted and inplemented and slow cooked in the USA.
What’s happening that being White is a crime ?
I wonder why in every White/black couples its a relation 9 to 1
that most of the time (90%)is black men and white women.
I’m not racist Im just a person who loves the real meaning of INTEGRITY.
We have to protect countries who had more changes of race cleaning like Norway before its to late.

To the person named Klandestin I am black educated from Harvard University and passed the Bar. I am 39 and will retire in the next five years with Millions in cash and assets.

I dont have any hatred for anyone of any race I think you should only marry who loves you no matter what the color, much love to you Clint give em hell. LOL
July 23, 2008 at 1:22 PM
To the ignorant morons who posted on this thread…in reality, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS RACE! It is an outdated concept MODERNLY based as a justification for the north atlantic slave trade. The idea eventually filtered into science, where eugenicists made unscientifically based claims that there are vast genetic differences between the “races.” Contemporary genetic research has shown this to not be the case. Simply put, there is only one chromosome that differentiates phenotypes between the “races.” And all it does is control skin pigment…that’s it!!!
Every human being (unless mentally incapacitated on some level) has the same ability to develop verbal communication skills, intellect, establish culture, and fall in love. Yes, the typical individual is sexually attracted to those who resemble themselves. Though, this is a socially constructed value. It’s time now as modern individuals to break down these retro viewpoints. We are all members of the same species who inhabit this tiny little rock shooting through space orbiting an insignificant star in one galaxy among trillions in the universe. How about we stop fighting over ancient differences and begin living as one.
So, to you retards who think we should “preserver the races.” I truly hope you die young, avoid procreation, or step out into the realities of our modern world. By the way…I’m a graduate student going to a school in the heart of Alabama. For the short time I have been here, I’ve noticed very little racism. And if anything, blacks tend to segregate themselves from the whites (can you really blame them). And though the whites here seem to put on their smiling faces and super nice southern attitude, and tell me “Alabama is not the same as it was;” I think the racist attitudes still run deep here in many people, white and black. I swear, the tension here can be cut with a butter knife.

WANTED: Picture of alabama with a nuclear explosion over it to add to the effect of this posting.
August 17, 2008 at 7:50 AM
I have lived in Alabama and I have lived in the North. I believe that I have seen more segregation in the North than in Alabama especially in the past 35 years. The first time I visited the North, Ohio. I saw whole neighborhoods of only whites. No Blacks any where around. I asked where are the Blacks. They are in there place. Their section of the city. I thought hum, didn’t we intigrate in the 60’s well I guess we did in the South at least. I saw this as well in New York city and Chicago. I was pumping gas in another very Northern city ,in Michigan, when I saw a car come racing into the station. A young Black male ran out of the car into the station, behind him was a car load of Northern whites who said, ” You better get your Black ass in there you N”’ or well kill you. I said to myself If this was Alabama that would be all over world tomorrow. Then I moved to the North West and found out about the Arian nations and how racist they are. Then I went to the west New Mexico and saw the worst the Native Americans. It all became clear to me then. The YANKEE slave traders and Indian genociders decendants love to point at the South because they are covering up their own filth. I admit that Alabama has had it’s racist past but I say that it is better now than what I experienced when I lived and travelled in the North. Alabama is definately more conservative than the Yanks but not more racist. I have seen it with my own eyes and they don’t lie. If you Yanks think that Alabama is drive through then drive on through and go somewhere else. We in the South Black and White can work out our own problems without you messing things up worse. You need to clean your own dirty laundry in my opinion!!!!!

I am from Alabama and there are African Americans and Whites who marry there. I am 52 years old and one of my high school classmates went though a divorce from his spoiled white lady and then he married a nice African American lady and is happy. I know of another man whose wife left him for ANOTHER WOMAN. He also met a nice African American lady and married. So there is definately inter racial marriage in Alabama. This vote is not all White for I have heard many older African Americans in Alabama who say that Blacks should marry Blacks and Whites whites. And many of us there know that the older generation ,70 and 80’s, though they have come a long way some still don’t think that innerracial marriage is best. I don’t agree with them but I still love them. I have lived in the North. Yankees don’t have anything to say to us with all their arrogance and hypocracy. Do you think that we are blind there are more KKK in the North as well as other extremist groups. Alabama ran the KKK out in 1980 and broke them financially there. OFCOURSE THIS WAS NEVER NEWS IN THE NORTH. Some have come back since and now they are against the Mexicans, who by the way, are hard workers and deserve a chance to better their existence. I am from Alabama and I also hate the KKK. But yank you’d better deal with your own evil. Get the log out of your own eye. By the way Yank is your neighborhood intigrated? Mine was in the 1980’s. In my experience in the North you are still segregated by neighborhoods. Don’t waist your time hypocrite pointing at Alabama while you are in need of change. You have always had this problem and it come from your past as we in the South have had ours. New England only shipped 300,000 African Slaves and sold then in South Carolina and Georgia after we became a nation under the American flag. This is in Hugh Thomas the Altantic Slave Trade. And not only that they shipped another 300,000 slave and sold them in Brazil and Cuba. They had 1500 slave ships the second largest slave trade in history 3/4 the size of Britains which was the largest. It went on until 1870. It was illegal from 1810 but the law wasn’t enforced. You can see where alot of the money came for you region to start their industries plus they had the South paying 85% of all federal taxes because they taxed all imported goods and this was the Souths trade with Europe. And we won’t mention the Native American genoside. And even during the Civil War there were still 5 slave states in the Union, Delaware, Maryland, West Virgina, Kentucky and Missouri. For the young Yank who wants to nuke Alabama. TAKE YOUR NUKE AND YOU KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH IT!!!!

I go to school at Auburn. This state reeks of racism and hatred of homosexuality. The people here have, for the most part, been brainwashed from their early days. They have been told (not all, but most), either directly or indirectly, that “they” (everyone that is different) are at least one of these three: wrong/inferior/evil. UAB is a haven for rational thought and open minds… I went there once… I loved it… my major changed and now I’m stuck in the shit hole known as Auburn Alabama. I’ll be voting for Obama, but my family wont… they think he’s a muslim… and wont listen to me when I tell them the truth. My father yelled at me when I told one of his friends that “yes, it is infact racist to not vote for someone because they are black”. A response to a very common statement I hear down here. The statement is modeled like this “Now I’m not racist, but “. I’ll be leaving this god forsaken state as soon as I graduate… I fear the Alabama stigma will follow me though…
October 22, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Oh yeah, I should add:
http://www.fuckthesouth.com
Highest crime rates, highest divorce rates, lowest education levels, and they want us to clean up OUR mess first? Heh, they should look to us as an example. But no, I guess that liberal “tolerance” is evil. Tolerance of free black people was evil, just like tolerance of women voting was evil, then tolerating un-segregated schools, then tolerating inter-racial marriage. They’re still working on tolerating gay marriage, but give them some time. Thaarrr abit slooowwwww.
October 23, 2008 at 11:42 PM
Y’all had a chance to rid yourself of the association. Looking like a better option every day, eh?
October 24, 2008 at 4:40 PM
God did not create geranimals, we do not live in a color coded world. Love is hard to find and if you find it in another race or even in the same sex. You are lucky to have found it at all. I too live in Alabama prejudice has not died down here. Mostly in the areas that are poverty sticken (and I am not talking about the black areas either) more like the back woods antics here. Hey the word “colored” is still used here quietly behind the hand so no one can hear. Just plain ignorance and uneducated individuals. Lord help us!
October 29, 2008 at 5:11 PM
Here’s an Alabama success story:
My father (white) lives in Alabama and remarried and had two kids. One of them moved to California and fell in love with a black girl. :)
When I visit my father in Alabama, I wear my MLK t-shirt and buttons everywhere. I don’t want to be lumped together with all of the developmentally-retarded white supremacists.
The argument that it’s not racism and that they just believe their kind should stick together is beyond laughable. They’re actually surprisingly more stupid than they look.
October 29, 2008 at 5:17 PM
Hey JW, please don’t bring God into this debate. God doesn’t like racists, dumbass. DUH.
November 15, 2008 at 11:48 AM
I am a full blooded redneck , that is in your eyes , I was born and raised in Alabama from the most raciest county in Alabama ” Cullman ” I served in the Army for 10 years and suffered wounds from my country , I have served and fought with men and women of all races and am proud to call the my brothers and sisters. Don’t judge my state over rumors and people you meet. I love Alabama and am proud to raise my kids here , My black friends love Alabama and are on the couch laughing at these post.As far a gays , who gives a fuck , don;t live here if you don’t want. We are simple people that don’t have all the drama of other states unless people bring it to us , look at the alabama National Guard and thier service to Iraq and the war on Terror and that have died for your freedom. Any one that does not like us for who we are can go to hell and stay out of our state , You can talk shit on the internet and hide , OH yea SEC , Alabama # 1 in the nation , sit on that one for a while.
November 15, 2008 at 4:16 PM
You *almost* sounded like what you were saying was the truth, until we got to your “don’t live here” part, which is laughable. To the rest of the world, I hope your comment proves my point. But you are right in one thing: You are far better than most of Alabama. Thank you for your service.
But something is still judged by it’s worst aspects. 47% of voters in Alabama voted to ban interracial marriage in 2004. That’s frickin’ ridiculous by any standard whatsoever. Even the Taliban has softened their political stance in the past few years, now allowing women to drive and go to school, and now allowing televisions. Yet we have Alabamans in 2004 voting like it’s 1954, having made less progress in 50 years than The Taliban, who include Islamic terrorists, have made in 5. That makes America look pretty bad.
Even if some of you are good, 47% is not a negligible number.
November 19, 2008 at 10:23 PM
why are yall getting so mad at alabama…..i could pick ou so many things wrong about all of yalls states and just blast every one of you guys states……oh i bet yall are all obama fans……which means yall are AGAINST LIFE….

I am from the South of England, and i am doing a project in media on Forrest Gump and looking at racism in Alabama, i personally believe that race and ‘colour’ doesnt matter but it clearly does to some people. Over all there isnt a right or wrong answer, if there was a right answer then everyone would ‘know’ the same and life would be pretty boring because nobody would have an opinion. I dont know what it is like to live in a racist community so i can only sympathise not empathise.
December 4, 2008 at 2:27 PM
I do not understand the meanings of racism. Why are people racist?
What is the point?
I have so many questions to ask, but I do not receice any answers!
This would be as I have not had an expierience of the racist society. My mummy told me that I am very imaginative and I enjoy participating in debates, so she is exactlly correct ay?
January 4, 2009 at 11:34 PM
Yall are killing me, I’m from Mobile Alabama. And I would never let a queer marry another queer or a negro marry a white folk! Come on now!!!
January 23, 2009 at 9:39 PM
Hey I am a current resident of Alabama and always have been my entire life. I just wanna say that everyone here isn’t racist. I can say that with the utmost confidence mainly because I’m mixed (half white, half black). So yea clearly everyone here isn’t racist or I wouldn’t even be here right now….
January 28, 2009 at 12:44 PM
Yes, racism is a problem here. It is everywhere, unfortunately. I’m an Alabamian (note that “Alabaman” is not a word; think Canada and Canadian) and I’ve lived all over the US and the world, but I’ve moved back here. I’ve experienced racism everywhere I’ve been. I’m thinking about Berkeley, California – very liberal place, the city logo was at the time a bunch of multi-colored faces meant to symbolize diversity – but the place is totally gentrified! And they’re all scared of Oakland. It’s so transparent. And the midwest, where diversity doesn’t exist, is very racist indeed. My brother lives in Ohio near New Vienna, which has a huge Aryan nation presence. I saw folks walking around in public with kkk tshirts in a suburb of Cincinnati. That would never happen in the South. Those punk ass skinheads would be beaten senseless, deservedly.
Alabama isn’t worse off than most places in this backward land. And I’d agree with some other posters that the South tends to be a scapegoat for the rest of the country – a place where everyone can project their issues.
What an unhelpful rant, an unhelpful dialog. I hope you all find peace with yourselves and with the world.
January 30, 2009 at 1:33 PM
i am a mixed hispanic and white guy moved to alabama from texas i am an american soldier who fought beside men of all races and i was quite a permiscuous teen. no one ever gave me any trouble about messing with black or white females while in school. the vote was primarily conducted through the views of older people whos view are much different then our younger gernerations. all races white black and hispanic in older generations believe in racial integrity correct me if i used the wrong term, but its not there fault its what they know. upon moving here from texas i noticed distinct differences in alabama if you are white you are really white and if your black your really black but in texas it isnt an issue… in high school one of the black girls i dated assuming i was white asked me if it felt strange messing with one of her race and the question puzzeled me alabama has an identity issue in texas we all know who we are and how proud we are of our accomplishments as a state but alabamians are dead set on being like everyone else. i live here now in a small town in north alabama and i dont have any problems i think everyone including the south has a twisted view of alabama.

Well, I’ve read all of the posts, and I agree with parts of ALMOST all of them. Now I have a few things to say. The first is that I’m from Alabama, and very proud to be. I think everyone should be proud of their state. The second is that just because you are from Alabama does not automatically make you a racist or homophobic. Saying all people from Alabama are racist is just like saying all Muslims are terrorists, or all African Americans are gang members. You can’t look at ANY group of people and assume they are all the same, and that includes white southerners. The third point I would like to make is you cannot judge a place or it’s people, without even knowing them. I happen to know quite a few interracial couples (my brother and my sister-in-law are one of them ) and they have never had any problems. Matter of fact, they both agree they have encountered more anti-interracial sentiments in San Diego than Alabama. Interracial marriage is legal here, but gay marriage is not, nor is it legal in a lot of other states. The last thing I would like to say is look at the facts http://www.humanrights.org . You will find more hate crimes in so-called “tolerant” states than anywhere in the south. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
When I tell any truth, it is not for the sake of convincing those who do not know it, but for the sake of defending those that do. ~William Blake

Well… I’ve just managed to come across this blog. As a native Alabamian I would agree racism is far from dead there. But if you ask me it’s far from dead everywhere else too.
First of all let’s not forget that 40% is less than half. If 40% were against then 60% were either for or undecided. Also from what I understand interracial marriage is on a slow rise in alabama.
Then again a poll I looked at from June 4-24 of 2007 17% of Americans disaprooved of interacial marriage.
Now Clint, it seems you’ve got your heart set on hating Alabama and it’s people so I won’t try and convince you otherwise. As to be heard where ear is none, as lead to grave in marble stone, my song may pierce your heart as soon. Sufice it to say I am one Alabamian who isn’t racist. I happen to think Alabama is a wonderful place dispite it’s short comings. I don’t agree with a lot of your agruments here but some of my fellow Alabamians make pretty shitty arguments too. So there it is.

Hi
Im from England and stumbled across this page, me and all my friends were shocked at some of the racist attitudes within.
I would just like to point out that we all are infact the same race so racism itself seems rather foolish! Im doing my PhD in biochemistry and I can assure you that we all bleed red, have the same internal organs and our chemistry is identical unless we get ill.
If we choose to dislike someone because of their skin colour then it logically follows that we should also be against people when they get tanned or sunburnt. Maybe we should even dislike those people who turn orange with too much fake tan?! Logically we should also form factions against people with different colour hair etc….
I never understood why people are unable to accept someone has different colour skin and yet we can accept if someone has different hair colour, gender, eye colour etc.
I would also like to point out in England the question of interracial marriage isn’t even raised people are people simple. I would really apppreciate it if someone could give a logical arguement as to why people cannot mary between races?! Take care

“Mike Says:
2008 November 15 at 11:48 AM
I am a full blooded redneck , that is in your eyes , I was born and raised in Alabama from the most raciest county in Alabama ” Cullman ” I served in the Army for 10 years and suffered wounds from my country , I have served and fought with men and women of all races and am proud to call the my brothers and sisters. Don’t judge my state over rumors and people you meet. I love Alabama and am proud to raise my kids here , My black friends love Alabama and are on the couch laughing at these post.”
Mike, Did your black friends have plans to attend the Klan rallies by opposing Klan groups that was scheduled for Cullman in late 2007? Cullman is a “sun down” town. Google that one. Do you REALLY think they would have felt welcome?
April 6, 2009 at 9:09 AM
“Alabama ran the KKK out in 1980 ”
Unfortunately, this is not true. In 1985 I could still see the signs, “Klan Rally Tonight” pointing down some side road on Sand Mountain. I, too, thought they were gone. In fact, they still are not (2009). What boggles my mind is the benevolence extended towards them by the state of Alabama and its citizens. Alabama, why are your churches sitting on the sidelines and not working one on one to counsel your neighbors? Alabama does not have a hate crime reporting law, therefore, their atrocities go unreported. A state such as Alabama should understand that a most conservative value is to lift up and look out for those who have no power to do it for themselves, whether it be the blacks, the legal Mexicans or Asians and their descendents. However, a compassionate method must be undertaken to return illegals to their respective countries and for them to be kept out. Because as we know, Jesus Christ said, “In as much as ye have done it to the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” We were also given the story of the good Samaritan and the golden rule. These are conservative values and ones which Alabama should take to heart in its policies. These are also good economic values.
As far as the slaves sold to Georgia and South Carolina (same post). Please recheck your history. Georgia outlawed slaves while South Carolina did not. As a result the labor intensive coastal plantation owners along the South Carolina coast flourished, while those in Georgia did not. The political power was vested in these counties and subsequently, Georgia changed.

I don’t know why you people support this interracial liberal bullshit….these black “men” rape and kill and hurt women get a clue this kind of behavior is wrong and should be banned alabama Is right!!!!
Take your mullato children and go back to where ever you came from
April 8, 2009 at 1:55 PM
And white men don’t rape?
April 9, 2009 at 3:00 PM
Those who post comments like this are every bit as ignorant as the “rednecks” they verbally abuse.
“The South is racist. Fuck Alabama.”
No educated, intelligent person would make such a statement. However, self important pseudo intellectuals do so constantly.
The fact is that prejudice against a person because of race, religion, gender, etc. is, TODAY, not socially acceptable. Societies all over the world have AND DO discriminate, from African countries to old and developed European countries. In this day and age, in some societies (of which the United States is a member) such discrimination is not socially acceptable in most educated circles. This does not mean that the old white grandfather who uses the word “negro” should be considered a bad person, nor does it mean that the old black grandmother who does not want her grandson to date a white woman is a bad person. It means that the Latino man who beat a gay teenager is a bad person, the white man who took advantage of a black man is a bad person, the black man who shot a middle eastern man is a bad person, etc. Racism exists in so many facets. Only the ignorant believe it is black and white, pun intended.
Until recently, many white people in the south, most especially poor white people, were raised to believe they were better than black people in particular. Anyone can be tempted by the idea that they are better than someone else. It makes the world seem a little less harsh. Some people are still raised that way. Many black people were raised to be wary of white people for fear they would be taken advantage of or worse. And still are. Educated people believe both of these attitudes to be outdated, but they still exist. Proving them to be right will never, ever help. Setting an example will. The people who TRULY believe that racism is evil also believe that prejudice against the poor and undereducated is evil. Being kind to those around you, no matter your skin color, ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation, etc. will win over far more people than ignorant, self important statements like “FUCK SOUTHERNERS !!!1111!!!”. That attitude is EXACTLY the VERY SAME attitude that makes people of one race feel they are better than another. They make no attempt whatsoever to find out more about the people they want to subjugate and it is therefore much easier to remain both ignorant and prejudiced.
The FACT is that Rodney King was beaten in L.A. and race riots take place in regions across this country. Take Miami, a city with extremely established communities based on race. Miami is in no way a southern community but continues to struggle with race relations-and people of all races are responsible for the struggle.
By the way, those telling blacks how they feel are my favorite misguided bleeding white hearts. ;)
I am white and will never, ever know what it’s like to be black, hispanic, asian, etc. and they will not know what it is like to be white. My friends are from all races and religions, gay and straight, American and not. We talk about issues such as this frequently because it’s important to educate, but we will never really understand anothers’ point of view. I have many non-white friends that love their home state of Alabama and I have many non-white friends from Chicago, L.A., etc. that prefer Alabama. And I have friends both white and not that would prefer to live elsewhere. Just because a person is a certain skin color does not mean they can’t call a certain place home, nor that they couldn’t want to.
Again, those that make blanket statements such as these we’ve seen here have the exact same thought processes that enable racists to believe they are right.
April 9, 2009 at 3:17 PM
And yet, your statement is a blanket statement too. Amazing how that works. 40% of people voted against interracial marriage, in 2000. That is sufficient and necessary for telling Alabama “fuck you, you’re racist”. At least you weren’t one of the racist comments to come out of the woodwork like #61 (3 above) (which actually came from Canda).
But yea — way to read into my statement, put words in my mouth, and then accuse me of making a blanket statement while doing so yourself. Nice job. You even through “uneducated” in there. Which is a mistake, since I hold a college degree. Nice try, though.

I am an Asian guy from Texas and I dated a white girl. We were both on a road trip to Atlanta and we had to stop in a small redneck hick town in Alabama. We went to Target to get some meds because I had a bad migraine headache. Once we stepped in the store, EVERYONE stopped and looked at us. I have never felt so uncomfortable in my whole life. One white guy came and push a shopping cart at me. I was about to throw down, but I was in a wrong situation. My girlfriend had to calm me down. This is a prime example of racism in Alabama. I know that there’s racism everywhere. BUT Alabama needs to get its head out of its ass and address of the problem. To me, racism is just stupid and ignorant.
April 19, 2009 at 11:49 PM
AHAHAHA u ppl r such lemming and douche bags! do u know white ppl r already the minority in the world population? do u know how many of these “minorities” (asian mexican mixed blacks whatever) in our homelands are waiting to see white race disappear? they want to use us to Improve their race and therefore killing OURS! do u know how many blacks-asians-hispanic-mixed are starting racial wars in the school against WHITE PPL???? IS THAT WHAT U WANT FOR THE USA AND CANADA AND EUROPE?? A COUNTRY WITHOUT IDENTITY?
So I’m here to argue u, all of u(white ppl with white partner) to have kids, as many as you can(more than 5) if you don’t, don’t expect any advisingthe liberal media is trying to push “Life with no kids, is good!” only into white countries, and that isn’t true at all, My mother has 10 kids(I’m one of them) and is kinda pretty how we help each other!
April 20, 2009 at 9:39 AM
^^ Too bad your cunt of a mother didn’t die during childbirth.
June 9, 2009 at 9:42 AM
I know this blog post is more than a year old, but for what it’s worth, I can’t take either side on this.
I am a Christian black woman from Mobile, Alabama. I currently live in Washington, DC, work for a major newspaper, and have traveled the world.
Alabama is really as racist as any other state, and the racism comes from people of all colors. A lot of its racial heritage is still very overt, partly because when you try to choose between heritage and morals, you often face a very difficult decision. Take the Confederate flag, for example.
Many Southerners’ ancestors fought and died in the Civil War, so to ask them to put the Confederate flag under a rug is asking them to choose between blood and country. And many people forget that blacks fought on both sides of the war, so the Confederate flag has meaning for them as well.
Nevertheless, the state’s lack of a public defender in a state where blacks make up the overwhelming majority of those on the wrong side of the law, backs the notion that race is still important. But all 49 states and D.C. pay their public defenders dismal wages for a ton of work. So the difference between not having a public defender and having a defender who can only afford to spend 5 mins on your case is not a difference at all.
Poverty is an affliction not limited to the South either. And, in the South, you can do a lot more with $20,000 a year than you can do anywhere else. So if evil can be measured by income, the South would commit the lesser.
So, if Alabama sucks, then so does New York, California, Illinois, Montana, Nevada, Texas…
Change is very slow, it’s costly, and it depends a lot on what people are exposed to. Unfortunately, the South, with it’s brutal combination of conservative brands of Christianity, government, and patriotism, is going to be the slowest region to progress. But that doesn’t make any region any better.
June 20, 2009 at 7:19 AM
(sorry about the grammar and punct. I was in a hurry)I am a black male born and raised in Cullman, Alabama. Cullman is known as the most racist county in Alabama. If you are at least 30 years old you know this and if you are younger you have no idea it is a racist place. That may not make since but racism has pretty much died out here. Sure there are a few back woods rednecks here but there are mostly just hard working people who get along. Clint I can tell you are set on hating Alabama and I can’t change your mind and wouldn’t want to. I guarantee if you visited Alabama you wouldn’t see or hear of racism anywhere. The facts about the voting is most Alabamians don’t vote. Look at your figures or the ballot count compared to Alabama’s population. By saying old white people who grew up believing and abiding by the law and living a good Christian life but wanting to keep whites with whites and blacks with blacks are racist is wrong. They are not racist it’s their old beliefs and way of life that helped build this country. Old black people are the same way. They also don’t want to mix colors. It’s a new age now and if all young people felt the way the older people feel the we would have a problem. But think of an old man or woman set in their ways. You’re not gonna change their mind. These old people can still vote but are not the everyday people you meet in Alabama. You have to be from the south to understand and accept this. I also think a lot of the comments were total BS and just complete lies to make the south sound worse. For one: Racism on the campus in Auburn, Alabama. Are you serious? I attended college there and me nor any of my friends experienced or heard of any kind of racism. The best way to find out id Alabama is take a visit there. It’ll be nothing special, just like every other state in the south. Everything is the same in Alabama as in Tennessee, Georgia and Mississippi. It is really weird that you would focus on Alabama? It’s like saying red M&M’s taste worse than the yellow one’s. If you’re from the south the direct focus on Alabama as a racist state is just funny. You may have your numbers and that 40% but that really means nothing until you’ve actually seen the south.
June 20, 2009 at 12:38 PM
Actually, I find you ever-so-slightly racist for making excuses for racists. “It’s okay; they’re just old.” That’s really no excuse for racism. And it wasn’t okay when my grandfather disapproved of my sister’s interracial marriage simply because he’s old, either. We broke ties until his deathbed.
It’s funny that white people like me are less tolerant of racism than black people like you. I’d say you’re actually part of the problem without realizing it.
June 25, 2009 at 5:09 AM
So you are saying I’m a racist against my own color of people? That’s just funny! I’m saying older people don’t see it as being racist. And I’m not too worried about an 80 year old kkk member. I’m sorry that your grandfather disapproved of your sister’s interracial marriage. But you can see my point of old people set in their ways. You just can’t change some peoples beliefs. If we could the world would be such a great place no wars, etc. But did that make your grandfather a bad person? Racism is wrong now but not then, it’s like someone telling you in 30 years all cows have to live in houses and have all the same rights as you do. You thinks that’s a bad example but it’s not. Back them a black man was treated like a nothing, an animal, savage, stupid. I have gotten older and now understand this and it took me many years to do. And I may be part of the problem without realizing it. I’m glad I’m a part of such a small problem. You are young and white and have no idea what a real “problem” with racism is. We have laws now, We don’t have to fear for our lives, we can vote, drink from the white mans water fountain, be president, marry a white woman. Racist people may frown upon black people doing these things but that’s about all they can do. A black man can also frown upon these trailer trash rednecks. I live in Alabama an am black and I am so happy you wrote about my Alabama being racist and I haven’t experienced it here. Yes, some old people are racist and I’m just fine with that. Old people like all of us die. 50 years ago black people would have never dreamed that this small problem with racism would be their smallest problem. I’m proud to live in Alabama!
June 25, 2009 at 5:50 AM
I would hope that the evolution of societal opinions would happen faster than the rate at which old people die off. If we simply have to wait for the bad people to do, there’s not really any point in any activism, is there? We just educate our children about the new ways, and wait for old people to die to get rid of the old ways.
I think enlightenment should move a bit faster than the speed of death, personally.
And actually, we all thought that did make our granddad a bad person. Lifelong ties were broken. The last letter he wrote [found on his computer after his death] still mentioned the situation in racist terms. And his wife was a liberated jew from a nazi labor camp — he stormed normandy on d-day. You’d think he’d have learned something about racism in fighting it up close and personally with a gun!
So yes.. Old people are definitely stuck in their ways. But I feel it’s not because they are old, but because people are scared to confront old people about them being wrong.
I wish there was a maximum age for Congress :)
June 25, 2009 at 1:08 PM
This doesn’t relate to racism so much as activism is general. For the most part it is pointless. You may be able to influence a malleable mind, but once someone is set in their ways, the chances are slim, regardless of age. I’m about as likely to convince you to change your opinions as you are to change mine. Which is close to 0%.
PETA is not going to convince me to stop eating meat. The church is not going to convince me to believe in god. And sad as it may be, a true racist will always be a racist.
It would be nice if enlightenment moved quicker, but the reality is that it does not. And I don’t think it ever will. Death and birth are the circle of life, and as much as we try to, we are limited by that.
July 12, 2009 at 5:22 AM
Wow…I am truly amazed by how narrow minded a person can be. All of these hateful comments over where someone lives. Clint, you say bad things about those from Alabama because they are racist. Okay, lets say people from Alabama are racist, which is partially true because some people are. How are you any different? You hate certain people because they are from a certain geographical region. That doesn’t sound nearly as ignorant as being racist does it? People are people. You will find racist and narrow minded people anywhere you go if you are looking for them. You will also find very open minded people if you are looking.
I was born and raised in Cullman Alabama. It is a very beautiful area with some very wonderful people. My father was also born there. Served his country for 22 years fighting for the freedoms we have today, like freedom of speech. No matter how ridiculous or hateful your comments might be, that’s your right and someone from Alabama fought so you could keep that right. Many someones from Alabam have fought for that right. I moved to Houston Texas 9 years ago after marrying my husband, but my family is still there, my interacial family, in Cullman Alabama.
If you haven’t been there you should go, I really hope you do. It is really nice. You might actually like it and the people too.
July 12, 2009 at 1:35 PM
Laura — Unless you can show me another state where 40% of people voted against interracial marriage, you don’t really have a point. You’re just whining because you live in a state more racist than most, and don’t like that being pointed out.
Is racism everywhere? Of course.
That doesn’t mean the level of racism is exactly the same in every state.
I posted numbers. You posted whining.
July 20, 2009 at 11:11 AM
I rented a condo in Gulf Shores for the summer. When I tell people I’m going there for my summer vacation they all raise their eyebrows asking me “are you sure you want o go there”. I’ve never been there but I’ve heard is very pretty.
Reading this blog is giving me second thoughts abot having my kids exposed to these much racism.
July 22, 2009 at 2:39 PM
So you think there’s still racism in Alabama? Well the reason that Cullman is the “most racist county” is possibly because of the few blacks living here to begin with. Out of a total population of about 80,000 there are less than 900 blacks. It’s not because we don’t want them here, it’s because they had no reason to live here to begin with. Cullman didn’t become a county until 1877, years after slavery was made illegal, so the only slaves in what became the Cullman area were what few lived there in the years before. No other black folks moved in after it became a county for an unknown reason. Now it’s true that in the good ole days Cullman hated the black folks, but now, Cullman County’s representative in the Alabama House of Representives, is James Fields, a black man. So while the state as a whole may be racist, it’s apparently not in Cullman. Now Winston County next door to us may be another story….
