So, I went to some concerts recently. Voltaire and Soulfly. Read on for setlists and reviews.
Voltaire
We went to “Goth Prom” at Nation, where Voltaire was playing. Carolyn blogged about it here: http://carolyncasl.wordpress.com/2006/05/06/voltaire-concerts/. Sadly, no songs from Banned On Vulcan were played. I would have liked to hear “U.S.S. Make Shit Up” again.
The setlist went a little something like this:
- Rammstein – a song making fun of Rammstein, hilarious. “You. You love. You love this. You. You don’t. Know what I’m singing.” It was awesome because it made fun of another band I’ve seen play on that exact same stage before.
- Ex-Lover’s Lover – the usual opener
- talk: prom night
- talk: don’t lose your heads - Headless Waltz
- talk: Deady dolls - Cannibal Buffet
- talk: Maxwell Atoms - Land Of The Dead – a new song for a new episode of The Grim Adventures Of Billy & Mandy
- Brains – the original song created for The Grim Adventures Of Billy & Mandy
- talk: his arm
- talk: bible treatment (to eliminate pus-bag, smash with bible) - God Thinks
** The previous was the first half of the setlist, which we have a copy of. We don’t have the second half of the setlist, though, so the rest is a bit shaky and probably out of order. - The Vampire Club
- some various other, possibly new songs we did not know and/or remember
- When You’re Evil – it wouldn’t be a Voltaire concert if they didn’t close with this
SoulFly
20060510. Jaxx, Springfield, VA. Well, I freakin’ fainted again. This time I at least made it to the start of the show. (When my head hit the floor at 9:30 Club, Ween hadn’t even come out to stage yet!) Those cigarettes that Carolyn’s coworker bums here are strong as hell! It was too much for my overheated body to bear. I felt a lot better when I took my jacket up, and someone gave me a chair to sit on after I hit the ground, so I’m kinda glad because I was in no mood to stand. I hate standing. Song-wise, I couldn’t name most SoulFly songs just by hearing them, but most of them were at least recognized. Here are the few songs I can remember:
- Bleed (but without the rap-ish part, I was pissed)
- Eye For An Eye
- Jumpdafuckup
- Refuse/Resist (by Sepultura)
- Beneath The Remains (by Sepultura)
- Back To The Primitive
- they played a lot of songs, but neither of us is intimately familiar with every SoulFly song.

I didn’t remeber them playing Alchemy Mondays. I thought that’s what they were going to play when he said “here’s a song about where we are right now” but it was The Vampire Club.

You may very well be right. I guess I’ll remove it from the posting. That was the one I was least sure about. It was the only one I wasn’t 95% sure about.

Suffice to say, Yes, it was really cool. A lot better than the solo-acoustic set. This time he had a cellist, violinist, drum set, the works…
The violinist performed pefectly, solo and everything, despite never having met Voltaire til the night of the show. Classical musicians are sooo professional!

XM Satellite Radio recorded the Soulfly show at Jaxx. they should be broadcasting it sometime in the near future.

Hmm, that would be interesting to have a copy of…

Just had to add: Jaxx is ALWAYS overheated. Every single time I’ve been there, regardless of the weather. I actually started feeling sick there too, because of the one dude who was chain-smoking next to me and because the place was 90 degrees.
I commented about Voltaire on Carolyn’s journal, too–we were there that night as well, at Nation. We stayed until the “Zombies Eat Brains” song or whatever it was. Wish I had heard his Rammstein spoof!

Well, they got new air conditioning a couple months ago…..
So the Carnivore & Celtic Frost shows were actually kinda cold.
This should help with people (ahem) fainting. And hopefully make it not so uncomfortable because yes, before, it was insanely hot! I’d go through every last ice cube in my drink just to nourish the sweet coldness of it all.
And, actually, the Rammstein spoof was, I believe, the first thing they played, before they *really* started. It was short, quiet, quick, so it would be easy to miss if you hadn’t noticed they were playing yet or were otherwise not devoting one’s full attention. (We were pretty much touching the stage…)

Ohhh, ok…yeah, we were pretty much near the back because it was so crowded up front. Heh, I hadn’t even known what Voltaire sounded like before that night, (and I mainly spent the night wandering around the club and dancing like crazy) so I didn’t hear much of him.
ANyway, yeah, I don’t really go to Jaxx anymore unless a band is playing there that I *love*. I went a few months ago to see Nevermore, and Division, and it was just so hot I had to leave early… sucked!

[...] Of course, the drink was my SPARE ICE CUP, and I didn’t lose any alcohol in this. In fact, I kept sipping for a good hour after that. So I got to pour a drink on somebody AND keep drinking my drink. It was like having my cake and eating it too. I was trying to make sure the fat bitch saw me enjoying my drink. Hopefully she would think it was alcohol, and wonder why I still had it after pouring a drink on her. Of course it was all just ice/ice water. I eat it throughout the whole show. Keeps me from fainting like I did at Ween and Soulfly. [...]
