When Ricky was 16, he went to a teen club and met a girl named Amanda, who said she was the same age. At the time Ricky thought it was a pretty normal high school romance. Two years later, Ricky is a registered sex offender, and his life is destroyed.

Re: the Sex Offender article–I agree that Ricky’s punishment was overly harsh. I don’t understand why a person would be labeled a sex offender if the girl he’s involved with lied about her age in the first place. How was he to know, unless he went around asking her friends, “Are you guys SURE she’s 16?”
Some 13 year olds could easily pass for 15/16, so I think it’s understandable why it’d be hard to tell.
I honestly feel kind of bad for that guy.
