I can see why some people think this should be an arrestable offense, but I VEHEMENTLY DISAGREE that anything wrong was done here. Hell, if it were the police, they probably would hvae been able to shoot the people making threats and get away with it. This guy can't even fire a warning shot into the ground?
Of note is that this guy knew they used ShotSpotter technology in his neighborhood — which automatically notifies police any time a gunshot is heard, giving them the location within 35 feet. This is a surefire way to get the police there faster than with a 911 call, which actually, to me, gives one more rationalization for firing warning shots.
No, AK-47s aren't illegal. And no, he was not charged for the weapon. He was charged for shooting it.
Personally, the right to life is listed before liberty in the declaration of independence — implying that self-defense is even more important than having freedom of speech, religion, press. That life comes BEFORE liberty. Makes sense.
