Because it does. A lot.

So… Friday night we did nothing but wood-staining-related work. We started after dinner, around 6:30ish, and went until just past midnight. This was both our longest night, and our latest night. Kipp & Casey came over afterwards, but we were all pretty tired, and they were having trouble focusing on things just like us. We did manage to watch the finale of American Dad, which was funny.

So… Friday we managed to get the bookshelf shelves and closet shelves stained.

Saturday, we had far less time to work on things — 11AM til about 6PM. We had to go to Jason & Anna’s Memorial Day party, and Eli’s recovery BBQ on Sunday, and Mark I met us at our house around 6PM… So…. We didn’t get too much done. More sanding, and a coat of polyurethane on the shelves / back of closet (I think).

But the parties were fun.  I don’t much like getting sick, and am still sick.  I drank two 2-shot margaritas at Jason & Anna’s and was TRAAAAAAAASHED.   Got to see a lot of people I hadn’t seen in awhile, including but not limited to: Jason, Anna, Chris Y, Kipp, Casey, Evan, Jesse, Tabbitha, Eli.

I wonder if it was the sickness.  I could barely stay awake (and did in fact nap) at Eli’s recovery BBQ.  We had to leave early, however, to meet up with our friends Greg & Nicole on Sunday nite.   I didn’t even play guitar hero.  All in all, it was a really fun weekend, if you don’t count the wood staining.  Filled with REALLY GOOD FOOD.  AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW — bacon-wrapped shrimp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monday I came down with something, and we barely did anything. Carolyn sanded, and I did another coat of polyurethane on the shelves / back of closet.

Tuesday: Same deal. Another coat of polyurethane on closet-shelves, back-of-closet, and bookshelf-shelves.

Tonight: Same deal. Another coat of polyurethane on closet-shelves, back-of-closet, and bookshelf-shelves. But the back-of-closet and closet-shelves will be 100% done after that (not counting optional 400-grit final sanding).

Tomorrow: Another coat of polyurethane on bookshelf-shelves, which will be 100% done (not counting optional 400-grit final sanding).

This weekend, we will finally be ready to continue to the bookshelf/cabinet itself (not just the shelves), as well as possibly the spiral stair railing, and the kitchen-window-portal.

Ugh.

Polyurethane isn’t cool to get in your hair, and it doesn’t shower out either.

We developed a checklist (spreadsheet). It has each section, along with a column to mark off: sand 60 grit, sand 120 grit, sand 150 grit, sand 220 grit, pre-stain conditioner, stain #1, stain #2, sand 220 grit, polyurethane #1, sand 220 grit, polyurethane #2, sand 220 grit, polyurethane #3, sand 220 grit, polyurethane #4, sand 400 grit.

The checklist is probably only 20% filled. But the closet is significant and probably represents a good 40% of what we need to do.

No clue when we’re finally gonna be done. The daily trips to Home Depot (and one trip to the Duron store) are getting old. We’ve gone through 3 dropcloths – thin plastic (Avoid), thick plastic (good but sticky and unruly), and paper (ruly, but doesn’t protect floor from liquids). Today we’re gonna put plastic on the bottom and paper on the top, instead of the other way around. It will work better I think.

Yuck. We only finished around 11PM last night and I’m expecting the same today. Yuck.
