So this [extremely socially awkward] co-worker got Boss’s Day cards for his 2 bosses and gave them to them today. I was then given a ‘heads up’ from a co-worker about this, so I could get on board if I want. But I’m not participating. I refuse to be brought to that level of brown-nosedness. (UPDATE: I signed the damn thing when everybody else did.) They already get paid more than us, and we’re supposed to by them a card too? Has anyone ever heard of anyone actually doing this? What the fuck?

When we were children, my siblings and I noted there was a “Mother’s Day” and a “Father’s Day” and asked our mother why there wasn’t a “Kid’s Day”.
“Every day is Kid’s Day,” she said.

I think it’s sort of brown-nosing, too, but I might possibly consider signing a card if I felt I had an EXCEPTIONALLY good boss (in other words, if he/she never gave anyone any B.S. policies, was extremely flexible with people’s hours, was understanding, etc)…
You know what’s weird, too? My boss had a birthday recently, and the same person bought her two different birthday cards, and asked us to sign BOTH CARDS. I said to her, “Uh, am I supposed to write something different on both of these? I don’t get it.” She said, “Do whatever you want–I got both of these because I couldn’t choose between them.”
They do have a “National Secretaries Day”, too, if that’s any consolation.

Hey now that I think about it– some people at QualTrax took me out to lunch last year. I thought it was really nice gesture.

Some coworkers of mine bought their boss a toy fire truck, because he’s always talking about how he’s constantly putting out fires. I was considering buying my boss a bottle of tequila, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to work out logistically. (can’t get away for long enough to do it today)

There actually is a Children’s Day, and it is in fact celebrated in some other countries. . .
I don’t care if the boss is exceptional or not. I’m simply not going to play the game, and then be expected to play again next year.
The potluck is bad enough. They about forced me to participate. Then my boss made fun of me for being unwilling to take a 45-minute trip to Trader Joes, when I haven’t gone into a grocery store to get food in 2007. NOT MY WAY OF LIFE

I agree, being forced into it defeats the whole purpose of a nice gesture. I hate those work-related “forced socialization” where people guilt-trip you if you just don’t feel like attending.

I got a boss’s card once, and that was because I had an awesome boss at the time.
I don’t think anyone did anything for me on boss’s day when I was the boss (for that one year & 1/2 or so). Lame-os.

Betrayer.

UPDATE: I signed the damn thing.

BTW, the baking thing shouldn’t sound as lame-o as it does. She bakes all the time anyway.

I think my officemate was talking about baking something for our bosses? Maybe? But the supervisors onsite at my job are okay.
October 16, 2007 at 6:38 PM
What, you havent been in a grocery store in 2007?
Ha hahahahah hahahahahah!!! :)
October 16, 2007 at 6:41 PM
Why bother? It’s a waste of time, gas, and effort. Much better to pay $6 and have it show up on your door.
I’ve probably been IN a grocery store in 2007, but only to, say, get potato salad before a BBQ or something.
Lines are for suckers.

Don’t bake for your boss. It’s like studying for a test on a bell curve. You just make everyone ELSE look worse!
hehe

Our department secretary brought everyone into the Boss’s office to wish him a happy boss day (a day late). She even baked goods for it. I was off-site, which was good, because I didn’t really see the point. “Secretary’s Day” sorta makes a little more sense to me.
