This Is Your Brain on God. Very interesting article about research into stimulating your brain to make you perceive God. Other research has already shown that our brain has been hardwired to have religious experiences from the start, so this is the next logical step. By the way, Comcast HDTV sucks. Just look at these screenshots. Comcast is a shitty company. Drop them now. Find alternative ISPs using http://www.broadbandreports.com.

Of course, based on the screenshots I saw, comcast’s claim that increased compression doesn’t reduce quality is total BS.

Hm, very interested in the Wired article. It’s interesting to me to see where this kind of research might end up, even the kind of practical implications it could have (providing relief to terminally ill patients, for one).

@#3 & #4: The cable companies have no choice but to compress because the amount of bandwidth over cable is nowhere near the amount over fiber optics.
Speaking of which, as of yesterday Verizon FiOS is now available in our neighborhood! I’m going to call sometime soon to switch and tell Comcast exactly why I’m ditching them too (cut off my Internet connection twice after I started Bittorrent downloads, causing me to lose my VoIP connection for a total of over a week and thus cutting off 911 service to my house).

Our cable used to have 2 cables going into each house. Then when digital came along, they disabled the extra cable. They should just fill both up, rather than compressing!

Just FYI, throttling technologies have come a long way in the last 1 or 2 years — even encrypting your traffic is no guarantee against throttling.
What sucks about FIOS is: They plainly stated to me that you are not allowed to run a server. Of course, that is generally the policy for Cox Cable too.
Also, they will cut the copper to your house. You wont be able to get DSL again without ordering a new dry rollout from Covad.

The research which studies brain chemicals and God is very intriguing to me. I’ve read a book or two on that subject and it’s very enlightening and thought-provoking.
