movie coverI'd rather be watching TV![IMDB link] [Netflix link] Haven’t seen this since I was a kid. We’re such big fans of Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes: The Animated Series that it was really our duty to go back and re-watch this. Plus, Mark I wanted to watch it with us.

PEOPLE: Nobody. Except Dana Ashbrook (aka Bobby Briggs from Twin Peaks). He is 11 years old, and plays a boy on a boat. No, we did not notice this when we watched the movie. Nor did we notice that the song “Puberty Love” was performed by Matt Cameron, who would later go on to be the drummer for Soundgarden and Pearl Jam.

QUIRKS: A lot of the characters that appear in Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes: The Animated Series (e.g. F.T., Chad, Tara) are not featured until we get to the second Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes movies.

BAD STUFF: The whole movie is very kitschy, and definitely in the “b movie” style… Even for the 1970s. Expect corny humor, ridiculous absurdity, and a couple jokes that may fall flat. You’d think this is a Troma movie, but it isn’t. That’s bad, too.

CONCLUSION: Yup. It was something. Glad to have watched it again. It’s not a great film by any means, but it is iconic to us.

And yes, we have long term plans to watch Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes 2 (Return Of The Killer Tomatoes…with George Clooney), 3 (Killer Tomatoes Strike Back), and 4 (Killer Tomatoes Eat France). Usually by the time you get to #4, you’ve lost half the humor — but then they’re going to make fun of the French, too! So who knows.

RECOMMENDATION: Fans of the cartoon, 1970’s B-movies, Troma movies (even though this isn’t one), or those simply wanting to fully understand “killer tomato” pop culture reference should watch this.

Those wanting to watch an excellent film should go elsewhere.
Even if you’re looking for an excellent comedy — you should still go elsewhere. This is not the excellent comedy you are looking for. This is something to watch on a slow night to gain some additional perspective.

By the way — some mumblings about a modern remake being done. Unconfirmed.

MOVIE QUOTE: “Last year, more people were killed by automobile accidents, heart attacks, lung cancer, and natural causes combined than by any one tomato.”

FRIENDS’ RATINGS: Benj really liked it. (more…)
