  • HARDWARE: Why Japan Hates the iPhone – it flopped in Europe too. Only Americans are behind the times enough, and consumery enough, to want to pay for this.
Because it's a lame piece of shit compared to the phones the rest of the world has? No Flash, no Java, no GPS no video camera, no multimedia text messaging, no TV tuner, expensive pricing, low megapixel camera, no bluetooth tethering, non-standard USB cable, non-removable batteries, pick any service you want, no rewarding AT&T for spying on us… the list goes on.

  • WAR ON DRUGS: End of an Era? No More DEA Raids on Medical Marijuana Dispensaries, US Attorney General Says
However, what happens to the people arrested and tried by agents of the old administration? They sit there in rot. Would Obama pardon them, or do they get to go to jail (with a mandatory 5 year minimum in some cases) for something that nobody else will ever go to jail for again?

Charles C. Lynch, a Morro Bay dispensary operator arrested and convicted on federal marijuana distribution charges, faces the dubious distinction of being perhaps the last person sent to prison under the federal war against medical marijuana; he faces at least a five-year mandatory minimum sentence when he is sentenced March 23. Is there any change or hope for the individuals directly affected by this?

  • APOCALYPSE: Ground Zero: Google Maps and Nuclear Weapons
Pick your detonation locatoin and nuclear bomb tonnage, and see what degree burns you get. I'm happy to report that modern nuclear bombs would not burn me at all. But a 50MT bomb would totally mess my day up.

  • MUSIC: How To Kill The Music Industry
A great article delineating 8 ways OTHER than "piracy" that explain why the traditional music industry is dying. I'm just glad I'll be there to see them fall.

  • TECHNOLOGY WAR: US District Ct. Says Defendant Must Provide Decrypted Data – of course, you can be forced to give a combination to a safe, too – but the spirit of this case is very irksome!
Wow. I love the excuse they use — that he basically already started to cooperate and can't change his mind later. What this tells me is: Never cooperate, ever. A telling comment: "That's like saying that you wave your right for freedom of speech if you shut up for a moment." [Yes, there are other nuances/details at work here.]

And what is this over? The safety that originally stripped away constitutional rights at borders? No. It's over porn. The cop thought he saw child porn. Nevermind that many adult actresses ARE 18.0 years old and you can't simply tell by looking. I'd like to see a list of the filenames and judge for myself.

Judge William K. Sessions III certainly seems to be grasping at straws. So basically the lesson is — if you waive your rights, they are gone forever.

You can't legally sign away your constitutional rights; Yet apparently you can't get them back if you "waive" them. Funny how that works via legal technicalities that ignore the spirit of the law.

  • MEDICAL/PERSONAL: HEELGARDE – Plantar Fascia Supplement (100 caps.)
I was sent a free 100 capsule ($65) bottle of this.. presumably to hook me on it so I keep buying it :) We'll see if it helps my plantar fasciitis. If I go to a doctor, they're just going to recommend exercises and wearing a night brace..
But this 7 months of pain SUCKS, and its getting worse. I'm still not recovered from standing at parties last Saturday.

  • WAR ON DRUGS: New Obama Attorney General Reiterates Call for DEA to Back Off in Medical Marijuana States
Not that the DEA has listened; despite this, they have been raiding california like crazy, knowing that these raids will soon stop. It's pure spite, and it's in spite of the current administration's wishes as well.

  • WAR ON GAZA: Israel aims to lift criticized pasta ban – they control everything that goes in and out, and want to make sure Hamas doesn't get the macaroni!
Gee, maybe this is why people fire rockets randomly? When you're totally helpless for 40 yrs, it kind of drives you crazy. Remember, those Palestinians who assimilated peacefully into Israeli citizenship had to live in martial law for 17 years. Looks like Israel is going to cave now that there is American pressure, since we fund them with $3B/yr.

4000 homes destroyed, 17000 damaged, and the people there are trapped in a hell. Just like the Jews trapped in the Ghettos in Nazi Germany. (And those helpless Jews in Nazi Germany would have been valid in accidentally killing civilians to get out of their hell, as the German citizenry was complicit in "following orders" and electing Hitler.)

People shouldn't have another government tell them if they can have macaroni or not.

  • GUN CONTROL: Supreme Court upholds gun-control law against those convicted of domestic abuse — even misdemeanors
And, 175,000 people just lost a constitutional right. Funny how misdemeanors don't take away any amendments rights other than the one currently being attacked — the 2nd amendment. There's a reason they made it 2nd, and not 10th, too. It's quite important. Ask Thomas Jefferson.

I'm disappointed in the supreme court here. It's scary when only Roberts and Scalia agree with you.

Anyway — this isn't going to stop a husband who wants to kill his wife any more than an "Attention bank robbers: guns aren't allowed in this bank" sign would stop banks from being robbed. But this is going to take away many peoples' right to self-defense. And the right to life was established in the Declaration Of Independence a good decade before we even had a constitution. And you can bet part of the right to life is being able to defend yourself.

So spending three times the amount I paid for the iPhone would make me LESS “consumery”? Because that’s what that it would cost me to get all those features in the popular Japanese phone they list there.

Actually, you can typically get way more functionality for less cost in Japan.

Yeah, but I’m not in japan. I’d love to have more functionality for less cost, but I’m not given that option here. That’s not an issue of whether the iPhone is good or bad, that’s an indication of a fucked up market for consumer electronics.

And who props up our fucked up market, allowing it to exist where others in other countries wouldn’t? The american consumer. They also reward AT&T for spying wholesale on us, and pay to be treated like a child by Apple. No bouncing boobies for YOU!

It’s definitely cheaper. Easier depends on the country. :) I hear in France even as a visiting non-citizen you can get a doctor to come to the house you’re at on a weekend. I can’t even get a doctor period on a weekend…
