movie coverI'd rather be watching TV![IMDB link] [Netflix link] Picked this dvd up at a yardsale for $2. Wouldn’t have normally selected this movie.

UNCOMFORTABLE PLOT SUMMARY (inspired by this): [highlight for spoilers] Girls engage in humiliation conspiracy, give man hormones, panties.

PEOPLE: Directed by Betty Thomas, a Hill Street Blues regular cast member (WTF!). Starring Jesse Metcalfe (Desperate Housewives, 2 episodes of Smallville) as Joe Tucker; Brittany Snow (American Dreams, Guiding Light) as Kate. Supporting roles by Ashanti (Resident Evil:Extinction), Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill, Sally from Van Wilder), and Arielle Kebbel (The Grudge 2). And a small role by Jenny McCarthy. Basically, this movie is full of really hot chicks.

QUIRKS: A teen comedy with a romance angle, and an angle of catapulting a social nobody into the popular crowd… Much like Jawbreaker, which we just watched. High school students, secret videos, revenge conspiracies, hormones, panties, humiliation, love, and mixed feelings.

VISUALS: Really hot chicks.

Bonus points for brief sexy lesbian kiss scene, but not as many as they’d have gotten if they’d used tongues.

SOUNDTRACK: It seems low-grade comedies always have like 30 songs in their soundtrack. I wonder why?

MORALS: Guys who act like douchebags and tell girls what they want to hear get laid a lot, but never make a real connection with anybody unless they start being honest.

POLITICS: Plenty of social politics here; You can see how someone’s behavior changes when they suddenly become popular. Much like Jawbreaker, which we just watched.

BAD STUFF: This is more of a comedy than a romantic comedy, but there are a few minutes about 2/3rds in where there are no jokes. “It stopped being funny!”, I exclaimed. Fortunately, the jokes picked up again just a few minutes after saying that. Unlike Knocked Up or Juno, the comedy doesn’t stop to take a back seat to the romance and drama.

CONCLUSION: For a yardsale pickup of a movie I wouldn’t even normally queue on Netflix, we were quite surprised. We both laughed a lot more than we expected! We had tried to watch this as a bad “Monday night movie”, but it turned out to be way better than expected! A solid teen comedy. Whereas Jawbreaker was a poor man’s Heathers in some ways, this was a poor man’s Jawbreaker in some ways. (But without the death.)

RATINGS: Carolyn: Netflix: 3/5. IMDB: 7/10.
Clint: Netflix: 4/5. IMDB: 8/10.
I guess I liked it a bit more than Carolyn; and it may have even just been my mood that night. Ratings are hard!

RECOMMENDATION: If you liked Jawbreaker or Mean Girls, you should probably check this out. It’s actually funnier than the summary would indicate.

SIMILAR MOVIES: The director considered this a First Wives Club for teenagers instead of divorced men. Chasing Papi seems to cover the same situation for adults in their prime. This also made us think of The Pink Conspiracy, except we are seeing things from the females’ points of view instead of the males’ points of view. And we’re not the only one to notice this; it was mentioned in the IMDB comments. The Pink Conspiracy is a better, more intense, less comical movie, however. The Pink Conspiracy WILL make you paranoid. This will just make you laugh. A lot of people on IMDB also compared this to Mean Girls.

MOVIE QUOTE: 1) Kate: “John Tucker, there’s only one guy out there for me, but you are not him.”

2) Carrie: “Kate, if the three of us tried this alone, we would kill each other. You brought us here. You showed us that we have something in common.”
Heather: “Exactly. We all want to kill John Tucker.”
Kate: “Wow. Okay.”

3) Scott Tucker: “I don’t think she’s your type…”
John Tucker: “Girl is my type! ”

FRIENDS’ RATINGS: Eric M really liked it (4/5). Christian liked it (3/5). Benj didn’t like it.
