movie coverI'd rather be watching TV![IMDB link] [Netflix link] We’re also trying to watch most or all of the National Lampoon movies…

PEOPLE: A very short-haired Samuel L. Jackson, Emilio Estevez, a quick Charlie Sheen cameo, some Whoopi Goldberg, more Tim Curry, a bit of Denis Leary, plenty of William Shatner (with a mustache), a cameo by James Doohan (aka Scotty), Denise Richards (pretty much as an extra), Kathy Ireland (who Clint kept thinking was Denise Richards), Corey Feldman (fortunately only for a few seconds), Phil Hartman (RIP), Erik Estrada (of C.H.I.P.S. and Sealab 2021), Jon Lovitz (of Saturday Night Live, News Radio, and The Critic), and a Bruce Willis cameo. Phew. Lots of people. Kathy Ireland is hot in this movie.

QUIRKS: Another frickin’ cop movie, but this one was funnier than Beverly Hills Cop. Why? It’s the “spoof-genre”/spoof movie comedy subgenre. Beverly Hills Cop was just a normal cop movie that was supposed to be funny. This movie is supposed to be a spoof movie, with the plot taking a back seat to the jokes. Beverly Hills Cop actually tried (and succeeded with some mediocrity) to be a real cop movie, but with an “Oh look how funny and out of place Eddie Murphy is!” factor. This movie is not going to bother taking itself seriously.

Which is good. Because some of the jokes fall flat (see Bad Stuff).

Noticeable spoofs (I never mention everything) include Silence Of The Lambs, 48 Hrs, Dirty Harry, Star Trek, Die Hard, Wayne’s World, Basic Instinct (GRATUITOUS BEAVER SHOT!). But they don’t go into *great* detail with the spoofs. The highlight spoofs are the Silence Of The Lambs and Basic Instinct scenes. It’s also great seeing Captain Kirk grab a pirahna with his teeth.

And another spoofy movie referenced this movie: A tape of this movie was in the background of the video store in a scene of Be Kind Rewind.

BAD STUFF: Some of the jokes fall flat. The quality of the writing isn’t great. Spoof-genre films today are much funnier. This is probably more along the lines of the humor level of Scary Movie 3 or Scary Movie 4, than of Scary Movie 1. (Hope that meant something to someone out there…)

The rental version had scenes not shown in the TV version, and vice-versa. Here’s an idea: Let me decide which jokes are funny by at least including the missing ones as deleted scenes. But honestly? I think every movie should come with a playback option to splice the deleted scenes back in (i.e. play them when they happen in the movie).

At least for a comedy, this makes no damn difference. Nobody’s going to notice. And this movie wasn’t so great that you’d want to chase these down anyway. Maybe they’re doing me a favor. But I like to do things myself.

CONCLUSION: This didn’t fail to entertain, but I don’t think I liked it as much as Christian D did :) It gets my generic pass (IMDB=6/10,Netflix=3/5 stars) rating, though if I had more precision, I might give it an IMDB of 5.5 or so. This was not the greatest comedy. But it was a comedy, and we did laugh a good amount, so we can’t complain too much.

RECOMMENDATION: Lovers of spoofs should watch this. But save it for a low-energy night. Don’t get excited over this, and you may enjoy it. But if you have any expectations, you might be screwed. :)

MOVIE QUOTES:
Wes Luger: We’re investigating a felony, Miss Demeanor.

Mr. Jigsaw: I’m your worst nightmare.
Jack Colt: No, waking up without my penis is my worst nightmare.

Colt: Give me a name!
Beckard: Weren’t your parents supposed to do that? (This one really cracked me up because he retorted it so quickly, and it’s inconceivable to misunderstand a cop asking you to snitch as a cop asking you to christen him with a name….)

Captain Doyle: You know as well as I that this guy’s cookies were laced with cocaine.
Wes Luger: No wonder I couldn’t eat just one.

FRIENDS’ RATINGS: Christian loved it. Benj liked it.
