movie coverI'd rather be watching TV![IMDB link] [Netflix link] “It was the worst job they ever imagined… and the best time of their lives.”

Watched in 720p HD, of course.

PLOT SUMMARY: Guy works at a carnival for a summer.

UNCOMFORTABLE PLOT SUMMARY (inspired by this): [highlight for spoilers] Carnies suck at relationships.

PEOPLE: Written & directed by Greg Mottola, director of Superbad, 3 eps of Arrested Development, and 6 eps of Undeclared.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland, The Village), who is essentially playing Michael Cera playing his character. Seriously. Never in my life have I seen one actor’s mannersisms be so identical to another. I went to the IMDB forum to post “Michael Cera wanna-be” and burst out in a loud howl that there was a thread with that exact title in the IMDB forum preview (i.e. latest 5 or so threads).

Also starring Kristen Stewart (Twilight, Jumper), who it seems is already being typecast into teen romance movies.

Supporting roles by Ryan Renolds (Deadpool in the Wolverine movie, Van Wilder in Van Wilder, Just Friends, The Amityville Horror, Dick); Martin Starr (Walk Hard, Superbad, Knocked Up, Freaks And Geeks); Bill Hader (Year One, Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Brothers Solomon, Superbad, Knocked Up, Saturday Night Live); and Kristin Wiig (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Walk Hard, The Brothers Solomon, Knocked Up). Wiig was tragically underused in this movie, but had a great moment of lip-mumbling that was quite memorable and funny.

Also with Wendie Malick (Dream On, Just Shoot Me, Father Of The Pride, 10 eps of Frasier, Trojan War) in a small role as the main character’s mom. Always cool to see her, though I think she works better in comedic roles.

I did not recognize supporting actor Michael Zegen as being from Assassination Of A High School President and The Girl Next Door.

QUIRKS: Based on a real theme park named Adventureland.

Lots of marijuana use.

SOUNDTRACK: Since this movie is set in 1987, the soundtrack kind of kicked ass! The characters complained about having to listen to Rock Me Amadeus 20 times a day, but I absolutely love that song!! We also have Judas Priest, Whitesnake, Crowded House, The Cure, Husker Du, INXS, Velvet Underground, and more.

BAD STUFF: Misrepresented! Netflix bills this as a comedy. IMDB bills this as a Comedy-Drama-Romance. DON’T BELIEVE THE LIES! This is a Romance-Drama-Comedy. It’s perhaps 60% romance, 30% drama, 10% comedy. There are laughs, but this movie is no more a comedy than Twilight is a horror movie. The central theme is romance, relationships, and life. If you prepare yourself for that, then it will be much more enjoyable. If you’re expecting an Apatow-style comedy, you’ll probably be sorely disappointed.

CONCLUSION: If you realize in advance that this is not a comedy, it is an enjoyable romance/drama/slight comedy movie. But if you’re setting yourself up for a laughable comedy, you’re going to be disappointed. Still a good movie.

RATINGS:
Clint: Netflix: 3/5 stars. IMDB: 7/10. Maybe 6.5/10.
Carolyn: Netflix: 3/5 stars. IMDB: 6/10. “There are some slow parts where I was just rolling my eyes going let’s get to the point of this movie.  There were some entertaining parts, but this was pretty depressing to be billed as a comedy.  This is a romantic drama.  Dramas are fine, but sometimes they get a little draggy/slow for my taste. I also thought it was going to be a fantasy, so when it started out at a high school/college (I was confused if this was before high school or if they had already gone to college) party, I thought it was a comedy… then it was  a drama… so yeah, that’s what I get for not paying attention.”
The native public rating for this movie is Netflix: 3.3/5 stars (3.5/5 stars for people who rate like me), IMDB: 7.3/10.

RECOMMENDATION: Worth seeing, but not super.

MOVIE QUOTE: Joel: What’s the point of being a writer or an artist anyway? Herman Melville wrote fuckin’ Moby Dick, he was so poor and forgotten by the time he died that in his obituary they called him Henry Melville. You know, like why bother? They’re just going to forget our fuckin’ names anyway.

FRIENDS’ RATINGS: Scott S was disappointed at how this was billed as a comedy, thus making the experience nothing like what he expected.
