movie coverI'd rather be watching TV![IMDB link] [Netflix link] It’s weird that I had rated this 3 stars on Netflix, because I really didn’t recall watching this. Carolyn felt like the AIDS subplot was slightly familiar, and I felt like I’d seen the opening scene — but that may have simply been when I previewed my DVD.

PEOPLE: Winona Ryder. Ethan Hawke. Janeane Garofalo. Steve Zahn (SubUrbia). Ben Stiller (who directed this). Swoozie Kurtz. And a bit part by Renee Zellweger that we didn’t even notice. And another bit part by Keith David (Goliath from Gargoyles). And an even smaller, uncredited part by Jeanne Tripplehorn (Waterworld).

QUIRKS: Generation X young adult angst. Home movies. Unemployment. Bohemians vs yuppies.

SOUNDTRACK: Conjunction Junction! And Violent Femmes’s Add It Up! But these songs are only as sung by the actors. And it kicked ass that they had Sepultura‘s Arise video on the TV!

MORALS: I’m not sure what the moral of this movie is. Sometimes you don’t realize what you want, and it’s right there in front of you? Sounds like about 1000 other romantic comedies.

BAD STUFF: Where’s the comedy?

CONCLUSION: They call this a comedy about romance in the 90s, but I found almost nothing funny in this movie whatsoever. Which might explain why I totally forgot it the first time I watched it. It’s one of those movies that thinks it’s deeper than it is.

I still enjoyed watching it, but barely. Just barely.

RATINGS: I had rated it before, so I kept my 3/5 stars ratings. As it stands, I barely liked it. On IMDB, it seems to have been rated 7/10, but I lowered it to 6/10. I wonder if I’m being too generous here, since I have apparently (possibly) watched it twice. If I forget about this movie 5 years from now, I daresay I should lower my ratings to 2/5 stars and 5/10.

RECOMMENDATION: If you like the people involved, you might want to see this. But DON’T BE TRICKED into thinking this is a comedy. At most this is “ROMANCE/COMEDY”. As in, it’s not even a romantic comedy to me — it’s a romance with very slight comedic elements. Not enough to qualify as “romantic comedy”.

MOVIE QUOTE: Troy Dyer: There’s no point to any of this. It’s all just a… a random lottery of meaningless tragedy and a series of near escapes. So I take pleasure in the details. You know… a Quarter-Pounder with cheese, those are good, the sky about ten minutes before it starts to rain, the moment where your laughter become a cackle… and I, I sit back and I smoke my Camel Straights and I ride my own melt.

COINCIDENCES: (Lord Of War, Reality Bites) 2 Ethan Hawke movies within 3 days.

FRIENDS’ RATINGS: Christian D & Benj loved it. Ian really liked it. I wonder what they saw in it. Metinee & Glen liked it. (Glen liked something?)
