LIMERICK REVIEW: There once was a criminal named Snake Plissken,
who was on his way to a horrible prison.
He was afforded a sentence-commuting deal,
that would require much violence and zeal;
as well as a great deal of precision.

HAIKU REVIEW: Prison islands suck!
Don’t crash your plane into one
if you’re president!

PEOPLE: Directed and co-written by John Carpenter. Starring Kurt Russell (the studio wanted Tommy Lee Jones, but I think Russell was a better choice. They also wanted Charles Bronson…), Ernest Borgnine (who, sadly, we remember mostly as the doorman in the short-lived NBC sitcom The Single Guy), Harry Dean Stanton (Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas, Twin Peaks:Fire Walk With Me, The Last Temptation Of Christ, Repo Man, Christine, Cheech & Chong‘s Up In Smoke), Isaac Hayes (Chef from South Park, also a scientologist), Andrienne Barbeau (remember when the captain in SeaLab 2021 wanted to be an Andrienne Barbeau-bot?)

QUIRKS: Manhattan island turned into a futuristic prison dystopia. A 1981 movie that takes place in a future that, as of today, already passed and was nothing like what the movie depicted. This is a dark, dark movie.

VISUALS: The computer graphics in the movie were actually wireframe models! Haha! And the model of the city? Repainted and used for Blade Runner! This is also one of the better movies for “trashed failed cities”

MORALS: In the prison society depicted in this movie — there are no morals. Only survival.

POLITICS: It seems that throwing a bunch of prisoners in an island to fend for themselves isn’t the best way to punish people. It reminds me of a Turkish prison.

BAD STUFF: Since it was made in 1981, the effects and feel of the movie do not look modern. Some people could consider this movie cheesy. I consider it one of the great movies of the early 80s and would not personally agree with this.

CONCLUSION: This is one of the great early 80s thriller/action movies, and one of the greatest depictions of post-apocalyptic societies to date — even if it wasn’t truly post-apocalyptic, and was just a prison island. This is a great movie. And oldie-but-goodie!

RATINGS: Netflix: 4/5 stars. IMDB: 8/10. I can’t help but rate this highly, as it was one of my favorite childhood movies!

RECOMMENDATION: I’d say this is one of the best early 80s action/thriller movies. It’s not actually HIGH action — it’s just unique. I’d recommend anyone who missed this to watch it. You really have to get to know the character of Snake Plissken!

SIMILAR MOVIES: The sequel is similar, but not NEARLY as good. And it’s being remade in 2011, so look for that.

MOVIE QUOTE: Snake Plissken: I don’t give a fuck about your war…or your president.

FRIENDS’ RATINGS: Benj liked it. (What? No one else has rated this?!)
