LIMERICK REVIEW: There once was a deadly virus;
More painful than Miley Cyrus.
Hopeful scientists researched a cure
while the government tried to stop fear.
I’d much rather be playing Gyruss.

HAIKU REVIEW: Infectious disease
controlled by the government.
Conflict of interest.

UNCOMFORTABLE PLOT SUMMARY (inspired by this): Government weapons development leads to complications.

PEOPLE: From the director of Troy and Das Boot, and one of the writers of the movie Armageddon. Starring Dustin Hoffman (meh), Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Cube Gooding Jr. (Albert from What Dreams May Come, Gladiator), Donald Sutherland (Heaven Help Us, etc), Patrick Dempsey (Sweet Home Alabama, Scream 3, Meatballs 3, Can’t By Me Love, and also in Heaven Help Us), and Zakes Mokae (also in Dust Devil, which we just watched, as well as The Serpent And The Rainbow and Waterworld).

Dustin Hoffman was supposed to be played by Harrison Ford. Ironically, Harrison Ford’s Blade Runner role was supposed to be played by Dustin Hoffman.

Oh, and the monkey from the movie? Marcel from Friends!

QUIRKS: Virus outbreaks. Military. Government cover-ups. Panicked people. We’ve seen all of this before, but at 14 yrs of age, this is one of the older movies I know of to deal with all of this. (Note: I don’t typically watch movies before 1980.)

VISUALS: Some cool helicopter chase scenes.

MORALS: Sometimes you have to NOT follow orders to do the right thing!

POLITICS: Don’t trust the government. It is more concerned with covering its own ass and preventing panic than it is with being honest and doing the right thing. When Swine Flu or whatever the next pandemic is hits… Don’t expect the government to be on your side.

BAD STUFF: Another sad ending tampered with by studios to be a happy ending. Of course that is pretty much par for the course with any A-movie.

CONCLUSION: Somewhat of a generic epidemic-based thriller, but engaging to watch nonetheless. But after it’s over, you reflect on it, and realize it wasn’t as good as how exciting it was while watching. Could have done without the romance angle, though. I was even going to comment that it reminded me of Armageddon in that respect, but then I noticed it shared one of the writers — so that explains why. It’s like we’re incapable of imagining the emotion behind global events unless they show it through the eyes of one couple’s love story! Argh.

RATINGS: Netflix: 3/5 stars. IMDB: 7/10.

RECOMMENDATION: Swine flu season is as good a time as ever to check out this movie on Bluray. Feed the fear!!!

SIMILAR MOVIES: Most epidemic-movies have zombies and such; this predated the current zombie resurgence craze that film has seemed to be experiencing. This is more like a government conspiracy episode of 24 than something like 28 Days Later.

MOVIE QUOTE: Colonel Sam Daniels: With all due respect sir, Fuck you!

FRIENDS’ RATINGS: Christian liked it. Benj hated it.
