Out of the 176 movies we watched in 2010, 63 (31%) could be classified as comedies, and 7 are ones that I consider “comedy/drama” or “drama/comedy”. I’m covering both of these in my comedy post (this post) this year.

Read past the jump for the lists of individual movies, separated by rating.

Click a movie title to be taken to its review. If you reached a dead page, that means the review hasn’t come out yet, but is already written. I write years ahead in my blog, so sometimes there is a backlog. I can email these ones if you want to see them.

***** COMEDIES *****

***** 5-star:

Hank And Mike (2008) – Does for Easter what Bad Santa did for Christmas. But it’s a buddy flick too!
Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) – straight-comedy of the year
Informant!, The – listed under COMEDY-DRAMA but hilarious
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (2010) – listed under ACTION/ADVENTURE, but epically awesome, with lots of laughs. Possibly our favorite movie of the year.
Sleeper (1973) – no movie this old has ever been this funny!
Toxic Avenger 1, The (1984) – THE Troma classic!
Zombieland (2009) – comparable to Shaun Of The Dead

***** 5-star (low):

Get Him To The Greek (2010) – AWARD: “highest goodness to title ratio of any film ever” – Movie good, title bad.
Night Of The Living Dorks (2004) – German zombie comedy being remade in English by Michael Showalter from The State

**** 4-star (high):

Control Alt Delete (2008) – never seen a guy fuck a computer before
Date Night (2010)
Death At A Funeral (2010) (remake) – actually, they remade this really well!
She’s Out of My League (2010) – i thought I rated this 5 stars, but I guess I didn’t. Still awesome.

**** 4-star (a bit higher but not high):

Dr. Strangelove, Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb (1964) – ok, ok – another funny movie from before I was born! I admit they exist! But it’s not nearly as funny as Sleeper (1973) .

**** 4-star:

Boat That Rocked, The aka Pirate Radio — see COMEDY/DRAMA below
Black Dynamite (2009) – awesome Blaxsploitation spoof; actor was in Toxic Avenger
Defendor (2009) – almost exactly like Special, but more funny and less good
Dinner For Schmucks (2010) – great remake
Final Fleshthe most fucked up thing we watched all year? PFFR tricks amateur porn studios into creating custom porno movies that are intentionally absurd (i.e. sex acts no human has ever done)
Innerspace (1987) – 80’s comedy FTW!
Lower Learning (2008) – children as the butt of the joke? In a child-hating way? I’m in!
Men Who Stare At Goats, The (2009) – overrated
National Lampoon’s Lost Reality 1 (2004) – mostly fake reality TV
National Lampoon’s Lost Reality 2 (2005)- mostly fake reality TV
National Lampoon’s Ratko: The Dictator’s Son (2009) – surprised me
Toxic Avenger 4, The: Citizen Toxie (2002) – better than 2 & 3
War, Inc. (2008) – the unofficial sequel to Grosse Point Blank, which I actually liked better
Zombies Of Mass Destruction – listed under horror, but it has its moments

**** 4-star (low):

Curdled — listed under COMEDY/DRAMA below
Fired Up! (2009) – A better version of #1 Cheerleader Camp (2010)

*** 3-star:

#1 Cheerleader Camp (2010) – A worse version of Fired Up! (2009)
All About Steve (2009) – Steve Carell doesn’t automatically make a movie win
Elf (2003) – just as good as Fred Claus
Fred Claus (2007) – just as good as Elf
How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003) – surprised me by getting 3 stars :)
Men At Work (1990) – a childhood fave of Carolyn’s
Knight And Day (2010) – Vanilla Sky if it were a romantic comedy adventure with no trippy surrealness??
R.S.O. – Registered Sex Offender (2008) – sex offender jokes! Sad and funny at the same time!
Sgt. Kabukiman, N.Y.P.D. (1990) – a Troma classic, we finally had to watch it
Toxic Avenger 3: The Last Temptation Of Toxie, The (1989) – not as good as 1 and 4
Vampires Suck – suitable Twilight spoof but just not that funny

*** 3-star (slightly lower but not low):

Risky Business (1983) – don’t see the fuss

*** 3-star (low):

41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It, The (2010) – poor spoof movie
Serious Moonlight (2009) – Cheryl from Curb Your Enthusiasm tries her hand at directing. Meh.
Rock, Paper, Scissors: The Way Of The Tosser – a mockumentary with so much deliberate badness that it took 3 sittings to watch

*** 2-star:

In Bruges – listed under COMEDY/DRAMA. BORING.

*** 2-star (low):

A Film With Me In It (2008) – BORING!!!!!!!
Zombie Strippers! – listed under HORROR, though it fails at both horror and comedy

***** COMEDY/DRAMA / DRAMA/COMEDY *****

***** 5-star:

Informant!, The (2009) – So weird how it’s a true story documentary and a comedy at the same time!

**** 4-star (high):

Roger Dodger (2002) – better version of The Long Weekend

**** 4-star:

Boat That Rocked, The aka Pirate Radio (2009) – great if you love music, lots of true life drama mixed in with comedy and tons of drug use
Defendor – listed under COMEDY

**** 4-star (low):

Curdled (1996) – quirky indie film about gore-obsessed cleaning lady with a guillotine fetish

*** 3-star:

Cemetery Junction (2010) – I’ve seen this movie before. It’s called life: it sucks.

*** 2-star:

In Bruges (2008) – BORING! Usually when multiple people tell me to watch a movie, and that I’d really like it… They’re wrong. There are exceptions, but this is another case of that….
