movie coverI'd rather be watching TV![IMDB link] [Netflix link]

PLOT SUMMARY: Dude’s kinda crazy… Think’s he’s a superhero. But he’s really just Woody Harrelson.

UNCOMFORTABLE PLOT SUMMARY (inspired by this): [highlight for spoilers] Crazy loser’s delusions end up killing him.

PEOPLE: Primarily starring Woody Harrelson & Kat Dennings (Norah from Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Mona from The House Bunny, Marla from The 40 Year Old Virgin, and who would have made a better Twilight Bella than Kristen Stewart). Also with Sandra Oh (Blindness, Sideways, Grey’s Anatomy), Elias Koteas as the bad cop (he will be a cop in the American remake of Let The Right One In, and was in The Fourth Kind, Benjamin Button, Thin Red Line), Michael Kelly (Michael Kuafman in Man On The Moon).

QUIRKS: Delusional super-heroism in the modern world. In a sense, that makes this related to the Venture Bros., Hancock, Special, and Super Capers.

POLITICS: Deals with the abuses of authority bad cops often do…. as well as the sadness of delusional people.

BAD STUFF: Nothing really… But, perhaps, it could have been funnier.

CONCLUSIONS: I still like the movie Special better than this — but this had the added benefit of being more comedic than Special. Definitely a good “superhero” movie.

RATINGS:
Clint: Netflix: 4/5 stars. IMDB: 8/10.
Carolyn: Netflix: 4/5 stars. IMDB: 8/10.
The native public rating for this movie is: IMDB: 7.2/10, Netflix: 3.2/5 stars (Netflix‘s predicted rating for us was 3.6/5 stars).

RECOMMENDATION: If you love Woody Harrelson, or superheroism done in the real world — you should check this out.

SIMILAR MOVIES: The movie Special. Most definitely, it was on our minds the entire time we watched this. Defendor was like a Hollywood-ed up, more comedic Special…. But with a [highlight for spoilers] sad ending. Special was very indie and atypical, but it ended with [highlight for spoilers] an uplifting message of hope. Not so much with Defendor.

With respect to the movie Special, Woody Harrelson is more comedic in Defendor than Michael Rappaport was in Special. Harrelson is a better actor overall. But this wasn’t so ***fucked up*** and messed up like Special. It wasn’t as disturbing. Defendor also didn’t have the question over whether or not the main character really has powers. Defendor was more like someone thinking he’s Batman; Special was more like someone thinking he’s Superman.

This movie – Super – sounds like an even better version of Defendor than Defendor. Will have to watch it when it comes out. Woody Harrelson is awesome — but let’s see what Rainn Wilson (Dwight from The Office) can do as a pretend superhero! [UPDATE: Super is my favorite of all these movies mentioned. It was more fucked up than Special, funnier than Defendor, and had a crazy hot sex scene to boot.]

MOVIE QUOTE:

Chuck Dooney: Who writes your dialogue? Superman?
Defendor: No. I write it myself.
Chuck Dooney: You know what? You need a good ghost writer. Somebody with talent.
Defendor: No. You need a ghost writer. ‘Cause that’s what you’re going to be after I pulverize you.

FRIENDS’ RATINGS: Jon B really liked it.
