CLAIRE’S THOUGHTS:
Quite different than the The Purge 1 — going out on the town and having the movie take place over a much larger space. Typical sequel fare: Do it larger. Go big or go home.
The whole thing contains a layer of symbolism that is a social commentary for American capitalism and what it does to its victims. The Purge is in effect a metaphor for real world social policy that trades lives for money. The skin colors used in the movie are not a coincidence.
In the end, though, once you strip away the social commentary, it’s basically just a generic cat-and-mouse survival movie. It could be a zombie or vampire movie, but in this case the enemy is actually *us*. The American people. Or at least, those that purge.
But it’s done well for a sequel. People generally like the 2nd one better. We rated it lower, but I think that’s because we’ve been enjoying movies less recently. I feel like it’s actually better than the original. It’s hard to rate consistently!
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: It was pretty good. Lots of action since they were pushed out to the streets.
